Where Does Star Wars Go After Episode IX? – Movie Talk

On this episode of Collider Movie Talk (Thursday, June 21st, 2018) Mark Ellis, Mark Reilly, Perri Nemiroff and John Rocha discuss the following:

– Future ‘A Star Wars Story’ Spinoffs on Hold at Lucasfilm

– ‘Terminator 6’ Provides First Look at the Return of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor

– ‘Welcome to Marwen’ Trailer Reveals Steve Carell in Robert Zemeckis’ Documentary Adaptation

– New ‘Ninja Turtles’ Movie in the Works With ‘Bad Words’ Writer

– Live Viewer Calls

Thanks to Collider’s own Steve Frosty Weintraub, sources for him reveal that Lucasfilm has decided to put their plans for more A Star Wars Story spinoff movies on hold, instead opting to focus their attention on Star Wars: Episode IX and what the next trilogy of Star Wars films will be after that film. Sources tell us that the previously rumored Obi-Wan movie was in active development, but those who were working on the film are no longer involved. It was recently reported that Logan filmmaker James Mangold was in early talks to write and direct the Boba Fett film, but that was before Solo’s release.

Thanks to The Terminator Fans, we have our first look at Linda Hamilton as Sarah Conner from the upcoming Terminator 6, directed by Deadpool helmer Tim Miller, produced by series creator James Cameron. The movie will act as a sort of retcon, with it rumored to take place after Cameron’s T2 Judgement Day, effectively ignoring the events of Rise of the Machines, Salvation and Genysis. It is slated for release on November 22, 2019.

Universal Pictures released the first trailer for Oscar-winning Forrest Gump and Back to the Future filmmaker Robert Zemeckis’ new film Welcome to Marwen. Based on the documentary Marwencol by Jeff Malmberg, the film stars Steve Carell as a man who loses most of his memory after being beaten nearly to death. Unable to afford therapy, he begins building a 1/6-scale World War II-era Belgian town in his yard, populating it with dolls that represent himself, his friends, and even his attackers. Welcome to Marwen opens in theaters on November 21st.

THR reports that Paramount is developing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, hiring Andrew Dodge, the writer of the Jason Bateman comedy Bad Words, to pen the script. Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce the feature via their Platinum Dunes banner. The company was behind A Quiet Place, however, there’s no word on whether this is a new incarnation or a third movie in the recently rebooted TMNT franchise.

  1. movie reviews should be separaie reviews!
I watch this show for current news, notreviews!!!! the phone calls are a waste of time and effort!!

  2. If this is true (i know Lucasfilm denied it but even so it still could be) It seems very tone deaf of Lucasfilm to what their fanbase wants. For sure some people didn't see Solo, people didn't like TLJ, but Kenobi was something mostly people were excited about. Deciding to put that aside in favour of a trilogy made by the guy who made the film that split the fanbase in the first place. Just doesn't seem like they know what their fanbase wants. This coming from someone who liked all the films they have released so far but the divisiveness is obvious. Kenobi was something that should move ahead its the type of film this franchise needs right now. Something enough of the fanbase can get onboard with.

  3. I like the mix it up style with Ellis hosting. Nice format maybe leave the calls and just have more guests jump in on there favoured subject. Still keep moving forward and making progress

  4. Only a matter of time before Star Wars dystopian future movies. Darth Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, a star wars story.

  5. Not interested in watching any more Star wars movies at this point.  That obviously could change, but for me, Star wars was a family story, the Skywalkers story, and well… they are all dead.  I could complain about how bad TLJ was, but it doesn't matter any more.  And Kylo is not a Skywalker.  He's a whiney immature brat who after years of training, was bested by a person with zero training.  So ya… its over.

  6. The live phone call idea sucks. Sorry for the bluntness. Twitter works just fine. This is unnecessarily introducing tech issues and awkwardness, taking time away from good discussion.

  7. After the last Jedi the fans do not trust critics. So I’m not sure if a high critic score can help a movie anymore.

  8. dont need new terminator movies. while the third one was iffy the ending set up what everyone has been wanting a movie about. when the machines rise up and you see the war that you seen in the beginning of the second. but then they did salvation. and that other one.

  9. Where does Star Wars IX go after….to the trash shoot where Luke, Leia and Han escaped from 😂😂😂😂😂😂

  10. Star wars has fallen so much, its funny. Kathleen kennedy was so cocky taking over thinking just the name alone will make the movies great. Rian Johnson is a joke, totally messed up the continuity within a trilogy to the likes ive never seen. But yeah lets give the guy that split the fans his own trilogy, sounds about right with how Kathleen Kennedy runs lucasfilm

  11. I want a Turtles reboot to feel like the original live action film! I loved every character in that film and April and Casey were simply awesome!

  12. I walked out of the last jedi happy, but now the internet has me thinking I hate Rian Johnson, what’s wrong with me?

  13. Love both of you but this is not MovieTalk. Where are the rest of you? I love the banter, especially with 4 of you on there. Wait and then hyoid switch out to Mark Reilly? Why not have them both on from the start. This is more a format for interviewing people, not a discussion.

  14. Kathleen Kennedy is one the best producers of all time. She produced three successful Star Wars movies out of four. The main problem with solo’s box office disappointment was the poor marketing. The casual fan was not interested at all. Spread out the films in the future and Star Wars will be fine

  15. Is this Movie Talk or Mailbag? Movie Talk always has more than two people on the panel. Were you understaffed on this day or something?

  16. I don’t want to see anything that comes from Disney. They don’n have real Fans, working on SW. Rian Johnson said in the interview that he wanted to make a movie that half of the people will like and half of the people will heat.Well, this M*F* succeeded. But it’s seems like most of the people didn’t like that crap 8: The Last Gallon.

  17. Loved Last Jedi, loved Solo. Wanted an OBI Wan movie really bad. Almost didn't see Solo in the theater because I had just dropped $100+ taking my family to see infinity war. Sometimes, it really is about the money.

  18. Personally I think that SW stories that have no connection to known characters or other story elements just have less reason for me to care. If you tell me this one is ALL new, no familiar anything to it, I'm going to check it out, out of curiosity, but having less excitement than I would for a show that is connected to some things I know of and care about.

Most of the fans I see saying "give me something new" usually follow that up with examples of things they haven't seen covered on screen yet, but are very familiar with. They don't really mean something new, just new to the films. They want to see their favorite books, games, comics brought to live action. They will likely claim that Disney ruined that too once they do give them what they have been asking for. So I think Lucasfilm knows they can't win regardless of what they do. So I hope they don't put too much stock in the feedback. No two fans visualized any of those novels the same way. So when some director gives you what you asked for, remember that.

  19. Anything but an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. Hes been in what, 6 movies already? Go Empire Strikes Back and do a movie on the hunt down and killing of the Jedi.

  20. Even with Rian Johnson having creative freedom in a part of the galaxy that’s not been explored. Fans will not see his film after TLJ. Rian Johnson is a tainted name and if Lucasfilms attaches it to anything a large portion of the fanbase will not go see whatever his name is attached to. It’s that simple. If Disney wants to lose money then release another Star Wars film with Rian Johnson attached to it.

  21. I hated it when John Campea started pushing to make Mailbag into THE JOHN CAMPEA show right before he left, and now it seems that we are making the SK show only Harloff & Ellis + making MOVIE TALK into the Mark Eliis Show. STOP!!! We became Collider/SK fans because it was a big group of friends talking movies…you are going the polar opposite of what we subscribed to you for!

  22. OMG….. I'm gonna have to unsubscribe if they continue this. Call-ins are the worst part of any show…. so why add it?

  23. The real question should be if Jurassic Park needs to be rebooted? Honestly, the first two movies were the only ones that were any good.

  24. Welcome to Marwen is one of the most unique and weird trailer I have seen in recent times. Loved it.

  25. Where Does Star Wars Go After Episode IX? Well is there a place lower than hell?
    It's dead Jim.. move on..

  26. The mediocre box office of Solo is a direct result of TLJ backlash. This is the fans punishing them for the multiple failures in that film. If they course correct in IX, most will be forgiven.
